Beautiful, high-quality images delivered by newly integrated super-resolution technology
In addition to approximately 14 effective megapixels, these models incorporate a new, sophisticated imaging procedure made possible by the latest “super-resolution” effigy processing technology. This procedure is designed to optimize the solution of a recorded effigy division by division to develop a high-resolution effigy that is sharper and and more true-to-life than ever before. This innovative engineering science captures beautiful, high-resolution prints and poster sized enlargements with fine detail. High-quality, HD movie recording The new WG-1 captures movie clips at 16:9 high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The monitor is treated with a particular AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to cut the glare of external light and minimize annoying reflections, making it easy to detect the subject, monitor recorded images and view on-screen menus even in bright sunlight. Optical 5x zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage Each camera is equipped with a high-performance, optical 5x zoom lens, covering focal lengths from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent in the 35mm format to approximately 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto). This wide zoom range allows the cameras to be employed for a wide assortment of subjects and scenes, from spectacular landscape and group shots to tightly framed snapshots taken from a distance.

New-generation Face Detection function with Self-Portrait Assist mode
The cameras feature upgraded Face Detection AF & AE functions that instantaneously and accurately detects up to 32 faces in the effigy field then captures each one in sharp focus and optimal exposure in just 0.03 seconds (even when the subjects are standing sideways or faces are tilted). This latest version likewise offers a potpourri of user-friendly features to simplify the procedure of portrait and snapshot photography and to improve the quality of the images. These include a:

Smile Capture mode to mechanically release the shutter the instant the subject’s smile is detected.

Blink Detection function to warn the photographer if the subject’s eyes close at the moment of shutter release.

Self-Portrait Assist mode perfective for Facebooking and other social networking activenesses that confirms whether the photographer’s own face is captured safely within the picture frame using the blink of the close-distance warning LED lamp on the camera’s front panel.

In addition to the automatic detection of pets’ faces, this mode allows users to pre-register the faces of up to three favored pets so these may be detected over other pet faces.

Triple anti-shake shelter to prevent dissimilar types of camera shake
1) Pixel Track SR When recording still images, the Pixel Track SR (Shake Reduction) efficaciously compensates for camera shake by processing affected images.
2) High-Sensitivity SR mode* When the cameras observe low-lighting conditions in still-image shooting, they mechanically raise the sensitivity to as high as ISO 6400, making it possible to use a higher shutter speed. This efficaciously minimizes the averse effects of camera shake and subject shake under poor lighting conditions.
* When the High-Sensitivity anti-shake mode is selected, the recorded size is fixed to five megapixels (2592 x 1944 pixels).
3) Movie SR mode* During movie recording, the cameras prevent blurry images by efficaciously minimizing annoying camera shake through the use of exclusive software.
* When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

I am user: “PentaxWG1″ The good the bad the ugly. The over all feel of this camera is strong and gripable. I love having metal and rubber on my electronics. I have dropped this camera. It was on my lap in the jeep and there was a hornet. I jumped out and it threw to the ground. No problems. The removable circle around the lens (macro stand) has threads. They are 46mm and can screw on filters and caps. I got a cap, uv filter, polorized filter, and flourecent filter on e-bay for $6. So other than the sony TX10, this is the only camera that can protect the lens. Can’t wait to buy a telescopic lens. My camera has been underwater about 15 ft. I’ve seen no problems with leaking. It has two openeings; one for battery and sd card, and one for hd/av hook-up. Both seem strong and sturdy to me. Battery cover does move ever so slightly but seems fine. Ok, thats the construction. As you have already heard, the macro/super macro is awesome. If you can get your specimen to sit still, you can get some pretty great material. The movie macro is even pretty cool, but you have to stay at a consistant focal length or it gets blury. I recorded a wolf spider in pitch black and the l.e.d. lights around the lens made it look like a monster movie! One bad thing about the macro is that when set straight down on the subject it will focus and take the picture on something as flat as a leaf or picture…. if it protrudes as much as a dime width or more it won’t stay focused. But when I pulled back just a hair the dime did look awsome. N-E-Wayz, It seems the closer you are to the subject with this camera the better it looks. A closer shot of two people, shoulders and up, look really good. But further away not so much. pictures of groups of people (full body) or the shot of a pond or a… cow…I say the camera is about par. Not bad but not great. I have tried the cybershot TX10 and if you strictly want waterproof picture quality go that way or panasonic. TX10 was beautiful but not as fun. Back to the WG-1. With par pics I do feel the camera is more consistant than its predesessor w90. Better with stand, free hand not as good..but always the same. Never a crappy picture out of nowhere. I also feel it does much better in lower light than the w90. It gets noisey but I was getting decent lighted shots (no flash) in areas that where very dim to the naked eye. The l.e.d. lights are handy, too. Optical zoom works pretty well for pictures. You’ll want a steady hand or stand if zoomed all the way in. Digital zoom sucks. The panorama is not sweep. You take 3 pics and line them up, then the camera stitches them. Not as convinient as the TX10 but it looks good and you can do tricks…As for underwater. Pictures and video where pretty darn good. Anti shake or wudever made it pretty smooth. With video underwater or above the zoom works but it doesn’t refocus very well. But over all regular video was better than I expected. Once again when things are close it seems very virbrant. I got about a foot from a cow’s face and the fur on his head got very HiDef-ish. Battery life….sucks, but I got and extra generic one when I ordered mine for 6 bucks. Over-all I really love this camera. I’ve been totally entertained for 2 days and havn’t even gotten to time lapse phtography yet. Although I do think of the pic quality of the TX10 now and then. I would have been bored with that camera after one dip in the lake. I can get a 10 mp zoom camera for less than a hundred and fill in anywhere the wg-1 lack.

33 of 34 people found the following review helpful.
GREAT underwater/MACRO camera
By qbc1899
I bought this product for an upcoming trip to Hawaii and wanted a camera with underwater capability. I also bought the Panasonic Lumix TS3 to compare and ended up returning it. I am happy with my choice to keep the Pentax.

Here is what I liked:

The durability and the rugged feel of this camera right away impressed me. I felt like I was holding a camera that wouldn’t break if I dropped it or tossed it into my purse. It was exactly what I needed for an outdoor/adventure trip. I was most excited to try out the Macro capabilities of this camera. They were among the first shots I took. All I can say is that they were amazing. Far and away, the quality was better than anything I have seen for a Point and Shoot camera. I could see individual bits of pollen when shooting a flower or individual pores on my finger. Even when I blew the images up and zoomed in, the clarity was amazing.

Once I got onto my trip, I used the camera underwater in various depths, from 3 feet of water to 250 (although I did not go down that far, this camera is only waterproof to 30 feet). The clarity of the images while zooming in in deep in water was great. I took a picture of a puffer fish that was close to 100 feet below me in 250 feet of water and the image turned out. I took pictures of sharks, dolphins, fish and coral. The pictures are clear and vibrant. The macro setting on some of the coral is to die for. I was so impressed with how these turned out. Had no problems with the camera being waterproof. After each underwater adventure (lasting from 20 minutes to two hours in the water, diving up to 20-25 feet deep for some pictures), I rinsed the camera with clean water and let it air dry before I opened any compartments. The color quality is spot on, no weird colors turning up. It is true to eye. The buttons are also easy to use and change to the best setting (outside, underwater, macro, auto, sport, etc). All of my pictures in daylight and soft light turned out great. The large screen on the back makes viewing pictures easy. The self-portrait assist was a cool idea and worked great.

Negatives:

The only thing that I was NOT impressed with on this camera was low light (nighttime, inside)/no light (nighttime, outside) conditions. Whenever it was dark out, the pictures often turned out blurry, even with the flash on. I may have had it on the wrong setting, because some of them turned out great, but others, not so great. Or it may have been user error (whenever I took the pictures, they generally turned out fine, the ones that are blurry tend to be when I asked random people to take a picture of me). I didn’t play around with the settings at night too much mostly because I had a DSLR camera with me that I used in those conditions. I did take a lot of sunset pictures that turned out great on this camera. But once the sun was down….not so much. Also, I went for a night dive with this camera, the underwater camera is useless at night because the flash captures particles in the water and with no flash it’s too blurry. However, the underwater video recorder worked great at night.

Overall, this is a great camera for it’s price. The camera performs well under most conditions. I lugged it around on a dusty six mile hike, underwater, running, and everything else you can imagine. The camera is easy to wash off, waterproof and has a FANTASTIC macro ability that I have never seen on a point and shoot camera before. If you are expecting this to be a DSLR, remember that this is a POINT AND SHOOT camera. Even so, some of the pictures rivaled my DSLR camera. I highly recommend this camera.

So when it came time to upgrade we bought this one before our trip to Mexico. We choose this one because of its ergonomic design. We figured this would work wonders when splashing around underwater and be easy to hold onto. The ergonomic design is the only redeeming feature of this camera.

At first we were concerned about how loose the battery door was. The battery door stayed shut but it would slide partially open when closed and was very loose (not enough for water to actually get in but enough to make us concerned). Thinking it might just be the camera we picked up, we went back to the store where we bought it from. After looking at other ones it appears to be part of the design. This should have been our first clue that this is a horrible camera.

While on vacation in Mexico the camera froze several times requiring the battery to be removed to get it to unfreeze. Now this can be a true problem when you need to let the camera dry for about an hour before opening the battery door otherwise you risk exposing both the battery and memory card to water.

We also discovered small water spots on the inside of the display screen. Clearly it is not as waterproof as claimed. I am glad we were only using it while wading in the ocean and not actually snorkelling.

The battery life is extremely poor requiring charging every two days when the camera is moderately used.

We also found the image quality not that good. After returning from our vacation, we looked at old images from our previous camera (Optio W10) and they were much better even though it was only 6 megapixels. In fact the same picture taken with our iPhone 3Gs had a better image quality.

Pros
- Great rugged looking design

Cons
- Poor image quality
- Freezes
- Not completely waterproof
- Poorly manufactured

Summary
Clearly Pentax designed a nice looking camera that gives the illusion of ruggedness; however, their production quality of this model is extremely poor. We’ve returned the camera and are looking for a different one (not from Pentax) to replace it with.

Nobody genuinely wants, or needs the best of anything. It doesn’t matter, whether it’s digital cameras, automobiles, homes, or jet airplanes. What we in truth want and expect, is value for our money. If I’m going to spend $100 for a camera, then I better get $100 worth of features and quality from that camera. If I spend $1000 on a camera, then I better get $1000 worth back as well. If you follow a few simple rules, you’ll see how easy it is to get the best camera your cash may buy.

Acclaimed science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon was famous for a couple of adages known as Sturgeons Laws. My favorite, and the one most applicable to our discussion is, “Ninety percent of everything is crap.” It’s simple, direct and barbarically honest. It likewise in truth helps narrow down our search. If the camera your looking at is not on at least one top ten list, then drop it from your search. If it doesn’t have at least a four star review from someone, then drop if off your list. There are so numerous cameras to choose from these days, there’s genuinely no need to settle for anything less then the best.

The second step, and a little more crusade intensive, is the trial run phase. You need to try out as some of the cameras on your now very short list (thanks to Theodore) as possible. Spend a day, and blitz your favored camera stores. Go to two or three, and just annoy and pepper the sales staff with as a lot of questions and requests as you can. If you go for the duration of off hours, you must have a great deal of time and space to try out all the cameras you want. See if you may cajole them into letting you take a few home to undertake out. After this exercise, your short list ought to be actually short. Maybe even a list of 1.

Of course if the above seems like to much work for you slackers out there, here’s my short list of great cameras that are all money well spent. In the underneath $150 category, the Canon PowerShot A570IS. It’s a simple point and shoot with 4x zoom lens, effigy stabilization, and Canon reliability. For the portability minded ultra compact FaceBook crowd, you can’t go faulty with the Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph. Slightly less effigy quality then the A570IS, and more or less more expensive, but a very easy traveler. Another favored compact of mine is the Olympus Stylus 790SW. The only waterproof, shockproof, dust proof, and freeze proof camera I know.

An amazing waterproof camera!
By Alex
This thing really does all the things Olympus claim. The photo quality is just so-so though. It’s not ever worth taking 12MP photos with it so I have mine set to 8MP. Like so many high MP cameras today, the lens just isn’t good enough to capture the detail – and what do you expect for a $200 camera that’s waterproof? However, it does allow you to digitally zoom that bit further and the video is great. It’s unfortunate that the video format is not standard, and doesn’t work with anything or any software I’ve found so far. I’m sure they’ll fix that at some point.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful.
Not horrible, not great
By Jessica Thompson
I had high hopes for this camera, but the reality is it is the bottom of the Stylus Tough series. The shutter speed is so slow that by the time the picture is taken the kids have closed their eyes or walked away. The flash is so ridiculous that everything has a white haze around it (that is if it isn’t completely washed out). Outdoor pictures are ok, nothing special, the shutter still lags though. I will be calling Olympus with the hopes that my camera was defective and I didn’t in fact purchase a low quality product (the only reason I didn’t exchange it is because I foolishly didn’t test it out until my return period was up, my fault).

On the plus side, I LOVE the one touch HD video recording, and of course, waterproof and shockproof make it great for adventures. The built in storage is great too, just in case you run out of space on your card.

Hopefully, if my unit isn’t defective, as the summer goes on, this camera will grow on me! I’ve got lots of “watery” vacations in store! This camera has lots of potential, no doubt about that, I will continue taking pictures and hopefully post some for others to see.

Accessory Recommendations:
If you buy this product you will most definitely need an adjustable or floating wrist strap (the one it comes with does not tighten around your wrist, and the camera does not float, obviously). You will also want to buy extra batteries (not too expensive on here) as the battery life is pretty weak. For a pretty low price you can get a good warranty with accidental damage because lets face it, if you buy a shockproof/waterproof/freezeproof camera you’re likely an adventurous person, and some adventures could leave you with a busted camera!

21 of 25 people found the following review helpful.
Good choice if you plan to abuse your camera, otherwise, plenty of better choices
By Surgery100
Positives:
1) submersible in water to 3m (10 feet),
2) shockproof
3) will work at extreme temperatures (rated to -10C, around 14F)

Negatives:
1)Extremely slow, takes about 6 seconds from the time that you turn on the camera to when its ready to take the first picture. The picture to picture time is also a fairly slow 2 seconds.
2) Poor quality of indoor pictures, some blurring as it does not focus well in poor light. Also some noise on the indoor pictures without flash.
3) LCD is not very bright which can be a problem when trying to compose pictures outdoors

Summary:
Very easy to use, the current settings appear on the side of the LCD and they are easy to change. A fairly robust feature set as well as its ruggedness are the main positives. The poor LCD and very slow response times make it hard to recommend as there are better cameras on the market (see Canon A3100 IS for example). If you need a tough, rugged, camera you’ll probably do better with the Panasonic Lumix DMC FT1. Bottom line, I bought this camera and within a week was returning it to buy the Canon A3100 IS, and I’m very happy with that choice.

  Easy Web Upload
Sharing photos online has become an daily action for a good deal of people, so Fujifilm includes the Facebook/YouTube Automatic Upload feature that makes for more immediate and having little impact modes of posting photos/videos on social networking sites. This feature allows users to discern and tag a photo for Facebook or YouTube upload. Once the camera is connected to a PC and MyFinePix Studio software is launched, all marked photos or movies will upload directly to Facebook or YouTube at the press of a button.

  HD Capability
The FinePix XP30 likewise offers stunning movies in 720p with sound at 30 frames per second with one touch ease. Many buyers are happy to take pleasure in HD movies on their PC, but with the optional HD Player accessory kit, with wireless remote control (HDMI cable not included), families may gather around their home HDTV to take delight in amazingly elaborated stills and high solution movie playback.

  Tracking Auto Focus (AF)
Created quintessentially to capture an action shot, the AF function tracks fast moving subjects so they don’t escape from the frame in a blur. Subjects will be tracked mechanically for as long as it is held in the frame and the shutter is half-pressed; when users completely press the shutter button your subject will be in the center of the photo in perfective focus.

  Advanced Image Stabilization
The XP20 and XP30 have a powerful sensor shift Dual Image Stabilization (CIS) system. CIS works as the photo is being taken as it combines a mechanically stabilized sensor with high ISO to combat camera/hand shake and subject motion for bettered low light shooting. The result is an expanded range of shooting situations where the cameras may be used without the need of a tripod or other support. With CIS working in the background, you may capture sharp, colorful scenes and portraits underwater or at night.

The menu options are clear and easy to understand. I do have a couple of complaints though:

The GPS seems to take a while to get a lock. (You can continue to shoot, but the photos you take until it gets a lock will not be geo-tagged.)
I was disappointed that you cannot charge the battery through the USB connection. This would be a great camera for the outdoor enthusiast, but you can’t couple it with a solar battery charger so you have to carry extra batteries.
There is no lens cover so you’ll want to watch out when throwing the camera in your pack or pocket.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful.
Do not buy this camera. Useless camera, even worse bells and whistles.
By sdcanuck
I purchased this camera back in June just before I went on a 3-week vacation that included a wedding and a two week bicycling tour. I did a fair amount of window shopping before deciding upon this camera. I was extremely excited about the GPS functionality and the rugged design.

After only a day or two of use, I was displeased with the camera’s performance (sluggishness, long GPS tracking time, heavy drain on the battery, sub-par picture quality, poor scene selection under automatic mode, etc.), but I had no choice but to continue to use it since I had already started my vacation.

Now that I’ve had the camera for over a month and I’ve tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, I’ve decided that this is the worst camera I have ever purchased. The extremely poor functionality of GPS aside, this camera is unable to take a decent picture. Even in decent lighting, photos come out blurry. For the $200+ I spent on this camera, I could have purchased any number of other cameras and would have been far happier with the picture quality.

The GPS tracking can often take more than 5 minutes, even when the camera is an open area with no obstructions. This shortcoming caused me much frustration every time I pulled out the camera on the road trip, hoping to capture a picture complete with GPS data only to be forced to wait 5 minutes for the tracking to occur. Sometimes the camera’s GPS didn’t even track after 5 minutes. And to leave the tracking ‘on’ drains the batteries to the point where they last less than 8 hours without taking any pictures, and even then there is no guarantee that the tracking would even work. The GPS function on this camera leaves much to be desired.

I consider myself a photography enthusiast. I have owned dozens of cameras in my life (point-and-shoot, SLR, film, digital). I typically lean towards Nikon products, but I’ve owned digital point-and-shoots from Nikon, Pentax, Casio and this Fuji XP30 the worst of the lot of them. Every time I pull the camera out to take a picture, I cringe as I imagine what the result will be when I download the images to my computer.

I returned the camera for a refund. Worst camera out there.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful.
Do not buy, trust me
By Bret O Sassenberg
Vacation in Italy was destroyed as far as pictures go when the door opened underwater. Pictures are sub par anyway and GPS is a joke. I can tell you for sure, the door was closed when I went in the water but it is so poorly engineered that it flipped open without me understanding to this day why. Fuji has not been helpful at all. Wasted Money in recession.

The firstborn step is to determine who or where you will buy your safe from. There are galore places to buy a safe today, you may buy from a “big box store”, an office supply store, a furniture store, a hardware store, online, or even from a professional safe retailer or locksmith.

With any other than the safe retailer or locksmith you run the very real chance of not being capable to get qualified counsel as to what you need, not being capable to arrange service or fix will have to the need arise. When you buy from a professional safe retailer or professional locksmith who likewise sells safes, you are likely to be dealing with an individual who knows which safe will best fill your distinctive needs, these people make their living by retail safes, they recognise how a queer type or model will perform, they know the features and benefits, and what they are meant to protect. Being the experts they are, they likewise offer service, repair and deliverance services.

Would you actually trust the shelter of your worthful valuables to the advise you will receive from a minimum wage stockperson at a “big box store”?

What do you want to protect and what do want to protect it against? Cash, jewelry, guns, essential papers, or computer media could all require a wholly dissimilar kind of safe.

Modern safes are fabricated quintessentially to protect versus specific threats, a safe meant to guard versus burglary, may not protect papers from fire. A fire safe, because of how it works, may genuinely destruct computer media or video tapes.

Burglary and jewelry safes are tested and labeled by a testing group according to how long it would take an expert thief, with all of the proper tools to break into the safe. The more time it would take, the more you have to remunerate for that safe. Contact your professional safe retailer for a finish discussion on burglary ratings.

Modern fire safes fabricated in the United States are tested and rated to keep the interior temperature underneath 350 degrees Fahrenheit for a specific amount of time, commonly indicated in hours. The char point of paper is 405 degrees Fahrenheit, so accordingly would be protected from burning. This is accomplished by the fill material in the safe freeing trapped moisture in the form of steam to keep the temperature within the proper range and seal entry points versus heat and flame. This release of steam could destruct video tapes, photographs, and computer media.

Modern media safes are constructed using a arid fill that does not release moisture. These safes are ordinarily much more expensive.

With the opening of world trade, and markets in the last few years, there are some safes being sold that are built in other countries, and a good deal of of them are labeled by groups other than ULâ. Some of these safes are very well constructed, galore are very poorly constructed. The problem is that the testing standards are not the same, the construction necessaries are not the same. It takes real diligence to be sure you are getting the shelter you think you are getting. This is another reason you need to seek out a professional safe retailer.

Next you will have to determine what size safe you need, be very honorable with yourself when estimating what will be kept in your safe, it may only be a little more highpriced to buy a more prominent safe than you need today. Having to buy a new more prominent safe could be much more expensive.

If you buy a the right way rated safe, built to protect what you are putting in it, could result in householders insurance savings, check with your insurance agent. Be sure that you follow whatsoever requirements they may have, failure to do so could result in no coverage.

Have your needs defined, and your questions ready, then visit a professional safe retailer or professional locksmith.

Disposable digital and film cameras (also called single-use cameras) provide a cheap and easy substitute for photographers. They offer an option for times when you don’t want to danger your costly instrumentation but you do want to take a heap of photographs. For example, what could be a scarier combining for a photographer than an pricey piece of camera instrumentation and water? While professional underwater photographers (or severe hobbyists) are more than willing to spend a lot of cash on their underwater cameras, what regarding the rest of us? Disposable underwater cameras offer an inexpensive alternative. After all, we may only want to take pictures one time on a snorkeling vacation. Why ought to we have to buy or rent a lot of costly equipment?

Disposable underwater cameras are idealisti for a wide potpourri of outdoor adventures where water, sand and rough use might come into play. Use them underwater, (many models are genuinely waterproof from 15 to as much as 50 feet underwater) but also use them above water for a great deal of outdoor shots in sunshine or on a light cloudy day at the beach, the pool, or even the desert.

An underwater disposable camera may also be called an all-weather camera since it is ready for anything at anytime. It’s idealisti for shooting outdoors in wet and even snowy conditions. Think of it as not only waterproof but also weatherproof, permitting you to use it to get a good deal of outstanding shots in the great outdoors. Use it in the rain, on the slopes, on a boat or in the ocean. Use it while snorkeling, skiing, fishing, boarding, or surfing. Take great photos of sunsets, wildlife, waterfalls or crashing waves.

The disposable underwater camera you buy will have to be exceedingly lasting and rugged. It ought to be easy to grip and take pictures, even with gloves on. It ought to fit in your pocket, beach bag or purse.

Most of these cameras are pre-loaded with 400-speed film with 27 exposures, and include a shock resistant, heavy-duty housing that floats. They are cheap (you may pick up a disposable underwater camera for regarding $6.00 to $20.00) and even for less if you buy them wholesale in quantity.

Not all underwater cameras come with a flash. To get actually nice underwater images, your best bet is an external strobe so you won’t develop “”backscatter”" (which looks like snow or dirt in your pictures). Also do not forget when taking your photos, peculiarly when snorkeling, to keep the sun behind you and to take vantage of that pretty blue clear water. With a disposable underwater camera you in truth may take outstanding pictures anyplace and at anytime.

301 of 303 people found the following review helpful.
Great little camera!
By Zannie
On a recent trip to Tahiti I believe I have tried about every kind of one-time use underwater camera on the market (i.e., Kodak Max Sport; Kodak Max Wet, and Konica Waterproof Camera and the Fuji). All of the cameras worked fine snorkeling, although I found the Konica and the Kodak Max Wet to be more difficult to use. [The Konica was a little difficult to see through the view finder with a mask on, and the Kodak Max Wet, most annoyingly had the strap and the photo button on opposite sides of the camera! A real disadvantage to a right handed person. As a result you essentially had to use two hands to take a photo, one to hold the camera and the other to depress the button. Any of these cameras will work fine for snorkeling, however the best were the Fuji and Kodak Sport. Keep in mind that all underwater photos will look a bit blue, however, snorkeling in the lagoon in Tahiti the blue was not really noticeable.

Here's the part I really like, now I admit, contrary to manufacturer recommendations, I did take both the Fuji camera and the Kodak Max Wet camera with me Scuba Diving. According to manufacturer directions the Fuji camera's recommended depth is 17 feet [which is the deepest of any one-time use camera on the market]. On my dives we never went deeper than about 22 feet. The problem with diving with these cameras is the pressure – you can take a photo just fine, but due to the pressure you will be unable to wind the film. However, I used the Fuji camera without any problems — I was always able to wind the film and the photos came out wonderfully — although they were blue. The Kodak Max Wet camera continually would freeze up, thus in order to take a photo you would have to snap the picture, go up several feet, wind the film then go back down — not very convenient and as a result I took very few photos. Although the photos I did take with this camera came out well, although they too were blue. The other benefit to the Fuji camera is that it is easier to use in the water, the button to take a photo is much easier to handle and there is a very large knob for winding the film, which is especially handy if you are wearing gloves.
The knob is a real drawback for both the Kodak Max Wet and the Konica cameras — I found those two cameras to be much more difficult to wind and may be near impossible if you are wearing dive gloves. Also with the Fuji and the Kodak Max Sport, the strap, the button and winder are all on the right side, which makes this camera very easy to use for a right-handed person.

In summary, if you go snorkeling I would recommend the Fuji camera or the Kodak Max Sport. … And, if you do plan to go Scuba diving, give the Fuji a try.

Not surprisingly, it delivers best underwater on a sunny day, but even on overcast days, it produces crisp pictures with great detail.

On land, it is much less particular about lighting, and produces pictures with beautiful colour in light or shadow, or both.

Since it takes such nice pictures out of the water, a first time user might want to practice with it on land. The lever action feels a lot different from the push-button action of regular throw-away cameras, and since you don’t hear the click of the shutter underwater, you might be uncertain whether anything happened. A couple of test shots (without the urgency of a sea turtle swimming by or a beautiful school of fish) should increase the photographer’s confidence in the camera when underwater.

The big wheel that advances the film works very well; it’s easy to find by touch, so getting another snap of something before it swims away isn’t difficult.

There’s also a little strap to keep it on your wrist, although it’s a good idea to keep a firm hold on the camera anyway while swimming.

The simple operation made it a hit with the kids; they were able to make their own special souvenirs of the underwater world.

Excellent value.

Film winded at greater depth.
2. The pictures came out clearer – not grainy and with better colors.

Don’t expect too much of it at depths below 8 meters since light won’t be enough (I used it on a bright summer day in the red sea). Even at shallower depths colors turn blue/green without use of flash.

I have taken it down to depth of 35 meters and the camera was fine, but wouldn’t take pictures at depths below 20 meters.

The pictures I took at shallow depth came out excellent.

Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were capable to project images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took a heap of more years. Up until the 17th century, scientists believed that light was composed fundamentally of the ‘white’ that is sensed by the humane eye. It took the exploration done by famous physicist Isaac Newton to discover that light is actually composed of a spectrum of colors. While he made a big contribution to the study of optics (that is at the core of camera advances) with this discovery, Newton did not genuinely have anything to do with camera development per se.

The early camera that original became a phenomenon was a little more than a pinhole camera and may be traced back to 1558. It was called the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura was seen as a drawing tool for a clearer and realistic portrayal of objects. It was in the early 19th century that an invention named the Camera Lucida was introduced by Cambridge scientist William Hyde Wollaston that consisted of an optical device that could aid an artisan view a distant scene or person or object on a paper surface that he or she was using to draw. In other words the artisan gets to view a superimposed effigy of a subject on paper and this effigy could be efficaciously used to undertake to draw, trace or paint it. Both the Camera Obscura and the Camera Lucida provided an effigy that was temporary, which could not be lastingly captured on to paper for later reference.

Studies nevertheless continued well into the 1800′s on how to in truth capture the effigy onto material. It was for the duration of this time, around 1822 that French researcher Joseph Nicephore Niepce, invented the initial photograph by using paper that was coated with a chemical. The effigy would not stay permanently on the paper and would vanish after a short while. Even so, in spite of the short-lived nature of the image, the conception of photography was born with this experiment and paved the way for further study and development in this field.

Capturing images to retain them longer and permanently became the next huge quest for researchers. Another Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre partnered with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1829, to formulate the routine of creating permanent photographs. Joseph Niépce passed away in 1833 but Daguerre continued with the work and succeeded in 1837 after a great deal of long years of experimentation. The routine of capturing photographic images that would not fade away, introduced by Daguerre came to be known as the ‘daguerreotype’.

The word ‘photography’ was coined by scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 and it is in truth is derived from two Greek words ‘photos’ meaning light and ‘graphein’ meaning draw.

A more or less more innovative version of the daguerreotype called the Calotype routine that makes multiple copies possible using the negative and positive method became available very soon after. In fact, it was for the duration of the 1840′s that the use of photographic images in advertisements introductory started and cameras made their mark on the power of visual communication. It was not much later, in the 1850′s that photographers primary started experimenting with underwater photography of seascapes.

Up until 1850, the procedure of capturing images was cumbersome requiring upto half an hour of light exposure. The invention made in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer was a benediction since the new method termed the Collodion routine called for just 2-3 seconds of light exposure to capture an image.

Prior to 1871, photographers went through a development procedure where they had to coat the plate with wet chemical each and each time and procedure the effigy immediately. With the invention the gelatin arid plate silver bromide procedure by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be devised immediately. This was an crucial invention since up until then the captured effigy had to be processed instantly.

Kodak produced in 1888 by George Eastman has been a innovative day pioneer of sorts in cameras and photography for the masses. George Eastman and the scientists who worked with him at Kodak devised the photographic film in 1889 and made it available in rolls for the mass use of consumers. An crucial milestone in our amusement and communicating history was the development of transparent roll film by Eastman. This development led to another key invention – the motion picture camera by Thomas Edison’s in 1891.

–>Modern Times

During the 20th century the pace of technology development in cameras and photography continued at an quickened pace much like a great deal of other key engineering developments. While assorted key inventions like car, telephone and the gramophone record happened in the later half of the 19th century, it is the last 100 years that saw major developmental work in a lot of areas of communications engineering science and as well as in other fields – TV, aircrafts, PCs, digital technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, fax machines and the internet, to name a few.

In the case of the camera, the developments simplified the whole procedure of photography, making it accessible to one and all at lowpriced prices and the camera industry denizens of our times made it into a mass phenomenon. The introductory mass use camera became available at the turn of the 20th century and may be traced back to the year 1900. There are hundreds of models of cameras available today both for the novice as well as the professional and the camera is an primary percentage of any family’s repertoire of will have to have gadgets.

–>20th century chronology in the history of the camera:

1913: 35 mm still-camera created

1927: The flash bulb introduced by General Electric Co. (The conception of camera flash existed much before but was based on the use of a flash light powder that was formulated by German researchers)

1935- 1941: Kodak starts retail Kodachrome film and subsequently launches Kodacolor negative film. Canon freed the Hansa Canon in 1936, the initial 35mm focal-plane shutter camera.

1948: The conception of the Polaroid camera is introduced in the market. American scientist Edwin Land developed the procedure for instant photography. Later Polaroid Corporation produced the ‘instant color’ film around 1963.

1957: Frenchman Jaques Yves Cousteau developed the initial waterproof 35mm camera for underwater photography named the Calypso Phot. The actual camera was formulated by the Belgian airplane technical architect Jean de Wouters based on the blueprint and suggestions given to him by Cousteau.

1972: The electronic camera that does not require film was developed and patented by Texas Instruments. This is nonetheless not the same as a digital camera even though you don’t require film in digital cameras as well. The launch of the digital camera is still some years away.

1975: Kodak’s experiments with digital imaging kicked off around the mid seventies but it will take another 20 years before a digital camera for the home buyer market is launched.

1978 – 1980: Asian players like Konica and Sony get started to make their mark. The ‘point and shoot’ automatic focus camera is launched by Konica while Sony starts talking in regards to the camcorder and demonstrates a prototype.

1981: Sony launches a commercially available electronic still camera. Similar to the 1972 invention by Texas Instruments, the Sony electronic camera came with a mini disc on which images were recorded and stored. The recorded images could be later printed or viewed on a monitor using a reader device.

1985: Digital processing technology makes it is entry. Digital imaging and processing is introduced by Pixar.

1986: The camera industry becomes even more buyer focalized and taps the fun and travel connotations behind camera usage, with the launch of the conception of the disposable single use cameras. Fuji is credited with the development of this concept.

Also in 1986 – 1987, Kodak started taking giant strides in digital development. Digital means, the photographic effigy is divided into tiny units of dots or squares known as pixels. Pixels are the programmable units of an effigy that may be processed by computers. Each effigy could be made up of millions of pixels. The use of pixels in digital engineering science allows storing huge volumes of pixels to deliver high definition print quality.

1990: Kodak introduces Photo CD’s. It is a system of storing photographic images on CD and then watching them on a computer. With this development the user-friendly approach of the camera industry started out to take concrete shape.

1991: Kodak introduces a digital camera aimed at masters and journalists. Kodak is credited with the invention of a pixel based camera technology known to us as the digital camera. Digital cameras don’t use film similar to their predecessor electronic cameras but the storage method is totally dissimilar and the final photograph is of much higher resolution. In a digital camera photos are recorded and stored in digital form. This digital info may be transposed to a computer and processed for printing. Kodak and Canon are well known digital camera makers and there are also various other key brands as well.

1994: The Apple QuickTake camera, a home use digital camera is launched. This is followed by the launch of a clutch of home use digital cameras by Casio, Kodak and others in quick succession for the duration of 1995 -’96.

–>The digital era:

The development of digital camera technology is considered to be linked to the development of TV and Video technology. The principles of transmission and recording of audio-visual images using digital electrical impulses finds use in camera imaging as well.

Through the 1990′s the developments continued in camera technology, the focus now shifting to the field of digital imaging which is where the future lies. Use-friendly features like software that may download digital images directly from camera onto home computers for storing and sharing on the internet is the new norm in the market place.

The camera, the computer, the software industry and the international web are today irrevocably interlinked to empower the user in experiencing the gains of camera usage to full potential. The innovation that sparked galore an invention in the camera industry found it is way into the digital world as well and continued amidst digital camera manufacturers. During 2001, the Kodak and Microsoft cooperative relationship ensured that digital camera manufacturers could use the power of Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) popular through Windows. The digital photo experience is a key visual driver in the Internet era. Many of Kodak digital camera models with EasyShare capablenesses are compatible with Windows XP. The Kodak EasyShare software enables users to transfer digital camera pictures directly from camera to their computers and then print the pictures or even email them.

Manufacturers in a related industry like the printing industry have adapted their merchandise to be in sync with the images devised by digital cameras. Cell phone makers have tied up with digital camera makers to give rise to new age camera phones in recent years. These camera phones may capture images and portion the images through the cell phone.

Among the 21st century digital developments are the innovative product offerings from digital cameras manufacturers and these are sure to occupy an important place in the ensuing history of camera development. For instance, the Kodak Professional DCS Pro SLR/c is a high-end digital camera and the Kodak website calls the DCS Pro SLR models the most feature-rich digital cameras on the market. It has an effigy sensor that may handle 13.89 million pixels and this makes it the most eminent solution digital camera available. High solution determines the sharpness or level of detail in photographic images. This is just a glimpse of the capablenesses that digital engineering science places in a user’s hands. Digital camera sales figures for 2003 show that the two key players Kodak and Canon have recorded impressive growth.

–>What does the future holds for camera users?

The features offered by digital cameras may be rather mind-boggling for the intermediate user and beauteous stimulating for most pros. Four key ongoing camera developments that are likely to further improve the routine of photography:

1. Greater solution from even the simplest, low cost camera models

2. Usage in any type of lighting conditions,

3. Compatibility throughout a range of software, hardware and effigy types

4. Rich colors and tone

While the higher-end digital evolution continues, the prices of the simple camera have crashed to such an extent that even children and teens are proud owners of uncomplicated cameras. The camera and photography interest starts young and this brings about a veritably huge audience base for the camera industry.

And all around history, it is evident that the endeavor of researchers and developers has been to make the camera available to a wide division of society. Without camera engineering science and photography, the other key developments of cinema and TV would have been delayed and what a boring place the world would have been without TV and films!!

No need to spend a couple hundred dollars on a underwater housing case or a few hundred for an camera specifically made for underwater. Also don’t settle the the cheap one time use under water cameras. These cases allow you to take beautiful clear pictures using your own digital camera. I needed a waterproof case for my Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Blue) and since I already owned a Dicapac for a another brand of camera I knew there would be no other choice for me than the DicaPac brand. This is a terrific way to protect your camera from water, sand and even snow. The optical lens sometimes interfere with the camera’s zooms lens, just make sure to hold the lens from the camera’s view. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Check out the photos I attached to the product page so you can see yourself how clear and beautiful the pictures turned out.

Melendez
I bought this last month for a trip to Belize and Guatamala. My first use was on a river cave tubing trip, so it only got wet off and on, but took great pictures. I was hesitant when I went snorkling at the reef off of Belize, but WOW, I was able not only to take pictures, but able to switch over to video on my camera. It’s not easy with the plastic, but it can be done. You can also see the screen on your camera when you are taking pictures. We went snorkling twice and I was in the water for a few hours, great product. My camera was safe and DRY all the time, no leakage.

Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were competent to project images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took some more years. Up until the 17th century, scientists believed that light was composed fundamentally of the ‘white’ that is sensed by the humane eye. It took the exploration done by widely known and esteemed physicist Isaac Newton to discover that light is in truth composed of a spectrum of colors. While he made a huge contribution to the study of optics (that is at the core of camera advances) with this discovery, Newton did not genuinely have anything to do with camera development per se.

The early camera that initial became a phenomenon was a little more than a pinhole camera and may be traced back to 1558. It was called the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura was seen as a drawing tool for a clearer and realistic portrayal of objects. It was in the early 19th century that an invention named the Camera Lucida was introduced by Cambridge scientist William Hyde Wollaston that consisted of an optical device that could support an artisan view a distant scene or person or object on a paper surface that he or she was using to draw. In other words the artisan gets to view a superimposed effigy of a subject on paper and this effigy could be efficaciously employed to try to draw, trace or paint it. Both the Camera Obscura and the Camera Lucida provided an effigy that was temporary, which could not be lastingly captured on to paper for later reference.

Studies nonetheless continued well into the 1800′s on how to in truth capture the effigy onto material. It was for the duration of this time, around 1822 that French researcher Joseph Nicephore Niepce, invented the original photograph by using paper that was coated with a chemical. The effigy would not stay permanently on the paper and would decrease rapidly after a short while. Even so, in spite of the short-lived nature of the image, the conception of photography was born with this experiment and paved the way for further study and development in this field.

Capturing images to retain them longer and permanently became the next huge quest for researchers. Another Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre partnered with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1829, to manufacture the procedure of creating permanent photographs. Joseph Niépce passed away in 1833 but Daguerre continued with the work and succeeded in 1837 after galore long years of experimentation. The routine of capturing photographic images that would not fade away, introduced by Daguerre came to be known as the ‘daguerreotype’.

The word ‘photography’ was coined by scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 and it is genuinely is derived from two Greek words ‘photos’ meaning light and ‘graphein’ meaning draw.

A somewhat more innovative version of the daguerreotype called the Calotype routine that makes multiple copies possible using the negative and positive method became available very soon after. In fact, it was for the duration of the 1840′s that the use of photographic images in advertisements original started and cameras made their mark on the power of visual communication. It was not much later, in the 1850′s that photographers initial started experimenting with underwater photography of seascapes.

Up until 1850, the procedure of capturing images was cumbersome necessitating upto half an hour of light exposure. The invention made in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer was a benediction since the new method termed the Collodion procedure called for just 2-3 seconds of light exposure to capture an image.

Prior to 1871, photographers went through a development procedure where they had to coat the plate with wet chemical each and each time and routine the effigy immediately. With the invention the gelatin arid plate silver bromide routine by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be formulated immediately. This was an crucial invention since up until then the captured effigy had to be processed instantly.

Kodak invented in 1888 by George Eastman has been a innovative day pioneer of sorts in cameras and photography for the masses. George Eastman and the scientists who worked with him at Kodak produced the photographic film in 1889 and made it available in rolls for the mass use of consumers. An essential milestone in our amusement and communicating history was the development of transparent roll film by Eastman. This development led to another key invention – the motion picture camera by Thomas Edison’s in 1891.

–>Modern Times

During the 20th century the pace of engineering development in cameras and photography continued at an sped up pace much like numerous other key technology developments. While assorted key inventions like car, telephone and the gramophone record happened in the later half of the 19th century, it is the last 100 years that saw major developmental work in numerous areas of communications technology and as well as in other fields – TV, aircrafts, PCs, digital technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, fax machines and the internet, to name a few.

In the case of the camera, the developments simplified the whole procedure of photography, making it accessible to one and all at lowpriced prices and the camera industry denizens of our times made it into a mass phenomenon. The firstborn mass use camera became available at the turn of the 20th century and may be traced back to the year 1900. There are hundreds of models of cameras available today both for the novice as well as the professional and the camera is an necessary share of any family’s repertoire of must have gadgets.

–>20th century chronology in the history of the camera:

1913: 35 mm still-camera created

1927: The flash bulb introduced by General Electric Co. (The conception of camera flash existed much before but was based on the use of a flash light powder that was invented by German researchers)

American scientist Edwin Land invented the procedure for instant photography. Later Polaroid Corporation formulated the ‘instant color’ film around 1963.

1957: Frenchman Jaques Yves Cousteau produced the initial waterproof 35mm camera for underwater photography named the Calypso Phot. The actual camera was invented by the Belgian airplane technical architect Jean de Wouters based on the blueprint and suggestions given to him by Cousteau.

1972: The electronic camera that does not require film was formulated and patented by Texas Instruments. This is nevertheless not the same as a digital camera though you don’t require film in digital cameras as well. The launch of the digital camera is still some years away.

1975: Kodak’s experiments with digital imaging kicked off around the mid seventies but it will take another 20 years before a digital camera for the home buyer market is launched.

1978 – 1980: Asian players like Konica and Sony commence to make their mark. The ‘point and shoot’ automatic focus camera is launched by Konica while Sony starts talking when it comes to the camcorder and demonstrates a prototype.

1986: The camera industry becomes even more buyer concentered and taps the fun and travel connotations behind camera usage, with the launch of the conception of the disposable single use cameras.

It is a system of storing photographic images on CD and then looking at them on a computer. With this development the user-friendly approach of the camera industry started out to take concrete shape.

1991: Kodak introduces a digital camera aimed at pros and journalists. Kodak is credited with the invention of a pixel based camera engineering science known to us as the digital camera. Digital cameras don’t use film similar to their predecessor electronic cameras but the storage method is completely dissimilar and the final photograph is of much higher resolution. In a digital camera photos are recorded and stored in digital form. This digital data may be transposed to a computer and processed for printing. Kodak and Canon are well known digital camera makers and there are also assorted other key brands as well.

The innovation that sparked numerous an invention in the camera industry found it is way into the digital world as well and continued amidst digital camera manufacturers. During 2001, the Kodak and Microsoft cooperative relationship ensured that digital camera manufacturers could use the power of Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) general through Windows.

Manufacturers in a affiliated industry like the printing industry have adapted their merchandise to be in sync with the images developed by digital cameras. Cell phone manufacturers have tied up with digital camera manufacturers to formulate new age camera phones in recent years. These camera phones may capture images and percentage the images through the cell phone.

Among the 21st century digital developments are the progressed product offerings from digital cameras manufacturers and these are sure to occupy an crucial place in the ensuing history of camera development. For instance, the Kodak Professional DCS Pro SLR/c is a high-end digital camera and the Kodak web site calls the DCS Pro SLR models the most feature-rich digital cameras on the market. It has an effigy sensor that may handle 13.89 million pixels and this makes it the most eminent solution digital camera available. High solution determines the sharpness or level of detail in photographic images. This is just a glimpse of the capablenesses that digital technology places in a user’s hands. Digital camera sales figures for 2003 show that the two key players Kodak and Canon have recorded impressive growth.

–>What does the future holds for camera users?

The features offered by digital cameras may be rather mind-boggling for the intermediate user and pretty stimulating for most pros.

The camera and photography interest starts young and this gives rise to a genuinely big audience base for the camera industry.

And allround history, it is evident that the endeavor of researchers and developers has been to make the camera available to a wide division of society. Without camera engineering science and photography, the other key developments of cinema and TV would have been delayed and what a boring place the world would have been without TV and films!!

Most helpful customer reviews

121 of 122 people found the following review helpful.
Fantastic upgrade to those 35mm film disposable underwater cameras!
By Kara
Just got this camera, and so far find it to be a fantastic value. I was drawn to this camera by it’s price and megapixel size (of up to 8.1). This price I got it for is very competitive with similar cameras of lower 3-6 megapixel ranges (I snagged it for about ninety dollars).

But please do keep an eye on the prices because I’ve seen the price on this change very frequently (in a matter of minutes) and vary about $15, since I started writing this review.

Why else did I get it? I’m going on a trip to the Bahamas in August and don’t want to take 35mm underwater disposable cameras with me. Airport X-ray machines can ruin the film if it’s in your carry on (since most of those cameras use ISO 800 film) and that’s the only luggage I plan on bringing. So I wanted to take a digital camera since I’ll be snorkeling while I’m down there, as well as have it not get ruined if it fell off a kayak or it started to rain. I’m too terrified to try one of those underwater pouches for my primary camera (a Samsung S700) due to lack of reviews on the pouch-type it would require and fear that if it got ruined I’d be out my favorite camera so I’ve opted for this camera and so far I am SO glad I did! Vivitar seems to have fit a lot of nice features into this point & shoot camera.

But if you’re looking for a professional camera, let me stop you right now and tell you to look elsewhere as this probably won’t be anywhere near your expectations. This is by no means considered a professional camera. However, if you’re looking for a better option than a 35mm underwater disposable… then it CERTAINLY provides better results than a 35mm film underwater point and shoot camera. I say this with experience from using those 35mm film underwater disaster cameras but from also working in a photo lab where I’ve seen the vast majority of what those cameras produce at water parks and the Caribbean… and the Vivitar Vivicam 8400 camera is by far so much better.

I tested it in my friends pool yesterday and it had no leaks around the gasket/closing mechanism and the pictures were surprisingly clear! I will add some sample photos to the product gallery as soon as I get some I’m willing to share with the public at-large. Overall, I give it a 4 out of 5 and that’s because I’m nitpicking.

Pro’s:
- Water resistant up to 30 feet!
- Supports an external SD memory card in up to 8GBs in size! This was great for me as I already have plenty of this type of card from my other camera. And this type card is generally inexpensive compared to other size cards. Just to give you an idea of storage capacity I put a 4gb SD card in the camera and it said I could store 1596 pictures at the highest 8.1mp setting OR 1 hour 37 minutes and 15 seconds of video! Obviously, you can do a combination of each if you switch between the modes.
- Uses AA size batteries. I’ve been using energizer rechargeables in this and got a decent amount of life from them from STEADY non-stop use. My suggestion would be to use the photo lithium or the rechargeables as I’m sure that just like all other digital cameras on the market, that they would probably suck the life out of the cheaper basic alkalines.
- Reasonably large LCD screen on the camera at 2.4 inches.
- Can record photos AND video.
- Comes with an adjustable wrist strap so it’s easy to secure to your wrist–however, should it come off your wrist the bright yellow color of this camera makes it easy to spot to retrieve unlike the blue model.
- Sinks somewhat, so you won’t have to deal with too much resistance to keep it staying underwater.
- Has the screw hole on the camera’s base for mounting to a tripod.
- When powering off the camera it clearly displays “Bye-Bye” on the LCD screen.
- Easy 1 touch “Mode” button to switch between capturing still photos or video.
- Lightning bolt button easily lets you change from auto-flash, flash (for all photos), or no-flash.
- Can take photos with Super Fine, Fine, or Normal settings.
- Although the camera is 8.1MP, you have the choice of shooting photos in the following resolutions (8M, 5M, 3M, 2M, 0.3M)-This can be great if you’re limited on how much space is on your memory card.
- You can adjust the white balance in Still Photo mode OR in Video mode. It defaults to “AWB” (auto white balance) but if you know how you’re lighting will affect your photos you can change it between Auto, Day Light, Tungsten, Fluorescent, and Cloudy.
- There are 3 Color Effect options to shoot photos in: Color, Sepia and Monochrome.
- There’s the option of changing the exposure setting from (-2.0 to +2.0): -2.0, -1.5, -1.0, -0.5, Auto, +0.5, +1.0, +1.5, +2.0
- It offers a Self Timer of either 10 seconds or 20 seconds.
- Date stamp is optional.
- A “Burst Snapshot” feature allows you to set up the camera to take 3 continuous images as you move the camera.
- Video’s are recorded in *.AVI format which are compatible with most Windows type movie-maker programs (ex: Windows Movie Maker, Corel VideoStudio, and many others)
- You can change the resolution of the video recording from 640×480 or 320×240. AND change how many frames per second it records (15fps or 30fps)
- You can “lock” the pictures you’ve taken to prevent them from being accidentally deleted.
- A Rotate option allows you to rotate photos taken at a 5M resolution or lower, on the camera.
- English not your primary language? No problem. There are 7 language options to choose from on the submenu: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.
- You can set the light frequency from 50Hz to 60Hz.
- The beep/buzzer sound on the camera isn’t annoying loud, but you can disable it if you’d like.
- Comes with a USB/TV-out cable so that you can play back your photos on the TV or even take photos or video’s while hooked up to the TV! Just use the USB cable provided, plug the small end into the camera and then the yellow jack to your yellow jack on your TV, and then turn on the camera! (I’ve never had this feature before and I think this is awesome!)

Con’s (and most of these are me nit-picking):
- There is a very apparent shutter-lag. The image you THINK you took will freeze on the screen after hitting the shutter for a couple seconds but in actuality it captures your picture about 1-2 seconds later and the actual captured image will flash on the screen for about a 1/2 second.
- It does not capture photos well at night or in dark areas.
- The locking/closing mechanism on the camera for the area where the SD card and battery compartment is feels a little cheap to me. I think a better material could have been used than plastic clamp/lock. So I would advise closing and opening it with care. You have to push a small black arrow right first to release the long plastic lever, pull that lever all the way down, and then the hinge will release to open the compartment for the batteries, SD card slot, and USB connection.
- Buttons on the camera seem a little stiff to press down on, this is probably due to the type of engineering required for this type of cameras purpose.
- The Vivitar 8400 is a little larger and heavier than my Samsung S700.
- There’s no lens cap to protect it when not in use.
- No separate “delete” button function. If you want to delete a picture on the camera during playback mode you have to hit the “OK/Menu” button and navigate to the delete option.
- After taking a picture, there is very little delay and it disappears very shortly off the LCD screen so there’s no time to check it. You have to use the playback mode.
- No sound on Video recordings which I think is a bummer given that the lower grade model-though priced higher (seen here: Vivitar VIVICAM-6200W 6.0 MegaPixel Underwater Camera with 4x Digital Zoom 2.0″ LCD) had the sound in its video recording option.
- No regular viewfinder like on standard cameras so that you don’t use up battery power with the live-view LCD screen. And the screen can be somewhat difficult to see underwater.
- When switching from auto-flash, flash (for all photos), or no-flash mode using the lightning bolt sometimes it “hangs up” and gets caught switching and the screen will go blank and a blue light beside the screen will flash.
- The Rotate option does not allows you to rotate photos taken at the highest 8M resolution, on the camera.
- The 61 page user manual is on the CD that comes with the PhoTags software. I realize this is a greener alternative but I would’ve liked to have had it already pre-printed.
- The Photags Express software is not compatible on Macintosh computers.
- Does not come with batteries.

***UPDATED*** 09/07/2009

I just wanted to update you all on my experience with this camera in the Bahamas… and quite frankly, I think it worked out great during all 6 days of snorkeling and swimming! And would still give it 4 stars! NO LEAKS–Even after opening it every night to access the hub in the camera so I could play the pictures and video back on the TV using the video cable that comes with the camera and re-closing it! I used Energizer Lithium AA batteries in it and did not have to change them at all the whole trip. I’ve added a few pictures from when I went snorkeling to the customer gallery… and one of the great reasons why I still think this was better than a 35mm underwater disposable… I took some great video as well! (I’ll add a compilation of video clips I shot to through a “video review” as soon as I figure out how to). However I did want to make some tips/notes for potential buyers or current users…

TIPS & NOTES:

DEFINITELY preset the white balance before entering the water or taking ANY pictures! It makes a big difference as to how your pictures and video will turn out. Do not trust the “AWB” aka “Auto White Balance” feature. I found that on sunny days that should be shot under the “daylight” white balance setting would appear blue-ish if you used the AWB setting.

YES the screen can be difficult to see underwater, HOWEVER I was able to see the screen enough on a bright sunny day where the water was pretty clear and easily switch between video and picture mode. The cloudier the water is, the harder it was to see in general and of course distinguish what was on the screen–not to mention, when the water is cloudy, you can’t expect pristine pictures–that’s just silly to expect that.

Do not attempt to take pictures of anything less than 3ft in front of you as you are guaranteed to get a blurry/out-of-focus picture. The fixed focus on this camera is just not designed for pictures that close. Take your picture 3ft away for a clear shot and then crop it later. The camera has digital zoom-not optical zoom so you’re not going to gain any quality advantage to zooming when taking your picture vs. cropping it later. At least if you don’t zoom in, if something moves you have a greater chance of still capturing it.

How to play back VIDEO in the playback mode: Once you’ve found your video clip on the playback screen press the shutter button like you would if you were taking a picture. This will get the video to start playing back on the screen for you. You can hit the shutter button again to stop it.

In VIDEO mode: Be sure to hold the camera steady and move it SLOWLY underwater when you’re in video mode. Otherwise the video will probably make you feel sick when you play it back later as it will seem like it jumps all over the place.

Make sure you rinse the camera well with salt-free tap water after bringing it in the ocean. The salt can crystallize in parts of the camera later making it difficult to close the camera’s memory card/battery hatch without risking breaking the hinge. If you close your camera gently and visually inspect the closing latch on the side to make sure it is completely down and the “#1″ arrow latch is to the left, so that everything is lined up where it’s supposed to be… I don’t see why you’d end up with leaks.

The pinch clip on the wrist strap to tighten it around your wrist has shown some signs of rusting internally. However, it still works well at tightening.

With all that said, if you’re looking for a more thorough technical review, I’m sorry–just not an area of my expertise. However the “Technical Specifications” information below is straight out of the user manual and may be of use to you.

I took about 30 photos first time out and was able to achieve results good enough to post on my blog. The reason so many reviewers get blurry shots, and the trick to taking good photos with this camera is simple (though a little annoying). There is a very long shutter lag time from when you push the button to when it takes the actual shot. However, and this is the annoying part, there is NO lag time from when you push the shutter button and when the screen freezes the image. So when you push the button the screen freezes immediately although it has yet to take the picture and you must wait for the screen to go back to live motion to know that the picture has been taken. The first couple of pictures I took I would begin to lower the camera just after the screen froze and that would be when it would actually take the picture thus making it blurry shot from my quick hand movement. So when you use this camera and want good results, push the shutter button, the screen will freeze and THEN the shot will be taken and the screen will go back to live motion. Enjoy, it’s a good one, just have to get used to the long shutter lag.

I’ve returned the camera for repair/replacement under the terms of the warranty.

The photos that I recovered from the 1st day were pretty good…certainly better/more convenient than using a disposable camera. The video quality is also decent, though there is no sound recording, which is fine for most underwater videography. Considering the camera’s low (tempting) price, the photo & video quality were just about what I expected, if not a little better. A negative is that it is somewhat difficult to use underwater: the view screen is hard to see, and the image of the photo you just took remains on the view screen for barely a second. On land, I found some of the functions non-intuitive (such as reviewing and deleting images), and the camera sometimes “froze,” requiring me to turn it off and on again to reset.

Overall, I find the ViviCam 8400 serves as a relatively inexpensive, moderate upgrade to disposable cameras. If it hadn’t leaked water and died on me, I might have even give it 4 stars given the low price. I’ll be interested to see if other reviewers experience issues with water leakage.

UPDATE (March 2011): My rating has steadily dropped. It was a huge hassle to get a replacement camera from Vivitar. First, they sent me an incredibly cheap NON-waterproof camera (total junk). After much pestering, I finally received a replacement. Looking past the fact that the camera leaked water, I’m surprised I was so kind in my original review of photo quality. Don’t be fooled by the 8 MP specs; photos look more like they are taken with an old-school 1 MP camera and are often blurry. And that’s on land! I thought I might have bought a lemon originally, but the replacement has the same problems, often freezing up…very frustrating and annoying. My new recommendation: if you want a toy for your kids, this might suffice. But if you’re hoping to take nice vacation photos, look elsewhere and be willing to spend a little more. I’m looking into Intova products, which seem to combine quality at a good price.

Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were capable to project images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took galore more years. Up until the 17th century, scientists believed that light was composed fundamentally of the ‘white’ that is sensed by the humane eye. It took the exploration done by widely known and esteemed physicist Isaac Newton to discover that light is actually composed of a spectrum of colors. While he made a huge contribution to the study of optics (that is at the core of camera advances) with this discovery, Newton did not in truth have anything to do with camera development per se.

The early camera that firstborn became a phenomenon was a little more than a pinhole camera and may be traced back to 1558.

Studies nonetheless continued well into the 1800′s on how to genuinely capture the effigy onto material. It was for the duration of this time, around 1822 that French researcher Joseph Nicephore Niepce, produced the introductory photograph by using paper that was coated with a chemical. The effigy would not stay permanently on the paper and would decrease rapidly after a short while. Even so, in spite of the short-lived nature of the image, the conception of photography was born with this experiment and paved the way for further study and development in this field.

Capturing images to retain them longer and permanently became the next big quest for researchers. Another Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre partnered with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1829, to formulate the procedure of creating permanent photographs. Joseph Niépce passed from physical life in 1833 but Daguerre continued with the work and succeeded in 1837 after a good deal of long years of experimentation. The procedure of capturing photographic images that would not fade away, introduced by Daguerre came to be known as the ‘daguerreotype’.

The word ‘photography’ was coined by scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 and it is genuinely is derived from two Greek words ‘photos’ meaning light and ‘graphein’ meaning draw.

A somewhat more progressed version of the daguerreotype called the Calotype procedure that makes multiple copies possible using the negative and positive method became available very soon after. In fact, it was for the duration of the 1840′s that the use of photographic images in advertisements introductory started and cameras made their mark on the power of visual communication. It was not much later, in the 1850′s that photographers original started experimenting with underwater photography of seascapes.

Up until 1850, the procedure of capturing images was cumbersome requiring upto half an hour of light exposure. The invention made in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer was a benediction since the new method termed the Collodion procedure called for just 2-3 seconds of light exposure to capture an image.

Prior to 1871, photographers went through a development routine where they had to coat the plate with wet chemical each and each time and routine the effigy immediately. With the invention the gelatin arid plate silver bromide procedure by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be invented immediately. This was an essential invention since up until then the captured effigy had to be processed instantly.

Kodak produced in 1888 by George Eastman has been a modern day pioneer of sorts in cameras and photography for the masses. George Eastman and the scientists who worked with him at Kodak developed the photographic film in 1889 and made it available in rolls for the mass use of consumers. An primary milestone in our amusement and communicating history was the development of transparent roll film by Eastman. This development led to another key invention – the motion picture camera by Thomas Edison’s in 1891.

–>Modern Times

During the 20th century the pace of engineering development in cameras and photography continued at an quickened pace much like a heap of other key technology developments. While various key inventions like car, telephone and the gramophone record happened in the later half of the 19th century, it is the last 100 years that saw major developmental work in numerous areas of communications engineering and as well as in other fields – TV, aircrafts, PCs, digital technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, fax machines and the internet, to name a few.

In the case of the camera, the developments simplified the whole routine of photography, making it accessible to one and all at lowpriced prices and the camera industry denizens of our times made it into a mass phenomenon. The introductory mass use camera became available at the turn of the 20th century and may be traced back to the year 1900. There are hundreds of models of cameras available today both for the novice as well as the professional and the camera is an essential percentage of any family’s repertoire of ought to have gadgets.

–>20th century chronology in the history of the camera:

1913: 35 mm still-camera created

1927: The flash bulb introduced by General Electric Co. (The conception of camera flash existed much before but was based on the use of a flash light powder that was produced by German researchers)

1935- 1941: Kodak starts marketing Kodachrome film and subsequently launches Kodacolor negative film. Canon freed the Hansa Canon in 1936, the firstborn 35mm focal-plane shutter camera.

1948: The conception of the Polaroid camera is introduced in the market. American scientist Edwin Land developed the routine for instant photography. Later Polaroid Corporation produced the ‘instant color’ film around 1963.

1957: Frenchman Jaques Yves Cousteau formulated the introductory waterproof 35mm camera for underwater photography named the Calypso Phot. The actual camera was devised by the Belgian airplane technical architect Jean de Wouters based on the blueprint and suggestions given to him by Cousteau.

1972: The electronic camera that does not require film was formulated and patented by Texas Instruments. This is nevertheless not the same as a digital camera altho you don’t require film in digital cameras as well. The launch of the digital camera is still numerous years away.

1975: Kodak’s experiments with digital imaging kicked off around the mid seventies but it will take another 20 years before a digital camera for the home buyer market is launched.

1978 – 1980: Asian players like Konica and Sony start out to make their mark. The ‘point and shoot’ automatic focus camera is launched by Konica while Sony starts talking with regards to the camcorder and demonstrates a prototype.

1981: Sony launches a commercially available electronic still camera. Similar to the 1972 invention by Texas Instruments, the Sony electronic camera came with a mini disc on which images were recorded and stored. The recorded images could be later printed or viewed on a monitor using a reader device.

1985: Digital processing engineering science makes it is entry. Digital imaging and processing is introduced by Pixar.

1986: The camera industry becomes even more buyer concentered and taps the fun and travel connotations behind camera usage, with the launch of the conception of the disposable single use cameras.

The use of pixels in digital technology allows storing big volumes of pixels to deliver high definition print quality.

1990: Kodak introduces Photo CD’s. It is a scheme of storing photographic images on CD and then looking at them on a computer. With this development the user-friendly approach of the camera industry begun to take concrete shape.

1991: Kodak introduces a digital camera purposed at masters and journalists. Kodak is credited with the invention of a pixel based camera technology known to us as the digital camera. Digital cameras don’t use film similar to their predecessor electronic cameras but the storage method is exclusively dissimilar and the final photograph is of much higher resolution. In a digital camera photos are recorded and stored in digital form. This digital data may be transposed to a computer and processed for printing. Kodak and Canon are well known digital camera makers and there are likewise assorted other key brands as well.

The innovation that sparked galore an invention in the camera industry found it is way into the digital world as well and continued amid digital camera manufacturers. During 2001, the Kodak and Microsoft cooperative relationship ensured that digital camera makers could use the power of Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) frequent through Windows.

Manufacturers in a related industry like the printing industry have adapted their merchandise to be in sync with the images developed by digital cameras. Cell phone makers have tied up with digital camera manufacturers to invent new age camera phones in recent years. These camera phones may capture images and percentage the images through the cell phone.

Among the 21st century digital developments are the progressed product offerings from digital cameras makers and these are sure to occupy an crucial place in the ensuing history of camera development. For instance, the Kodak Professional DCS Pro SLR/c is a high-end digital camera and the Kodak internetsite calls the DCS Pro SLR models the most feature-rich digital cameras on the market.

The features offered by digital cameras may be rather mind-boggling for the intermediate user and finelooking stimulating for most pros. Four key ongoing camera developments that are likely to further improve the procedure of photography:

And allround history, it is evident that the endeavor of researchers and developers has been to make the camera available to a wide division of society. Without camera engineering science and photography, the other key developments of cinema and TV would have been delayed and what a boring place the world would have been without TV and films!!
